In my ears

Adam Grant podcast with Cal Newport

5 March 2024

This podcast episode was thought-provoking, challenging me to rethink productivity in my own business. Cal Newport’s new book, Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout, came out today, and in this podcast episode, he stated the three principles of slow productivity that he explores in his book. They are:

  1. Do fewer things at the same time
  2. Work at a more natural pace (e.g. do not work at full intensity 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks per year)
  3. Obsess over the quality of work that is done

Cal believes that if all three things come together, then knowledge work can become high-impact and effective but also sustainable and meaningful.

I especially enjoyed the exchange between Newport and Grant at the end of the episode, in which they challenged each other’s convictions on how to engage with social media and email.

I’m excited to pick up Slow Productivity at my local bookstore, Still North, tomorrow. I’ll combine the trip to the bookstore with an around-the-town walk with Jamie Tartt. It will be good to get out of the muddy fields and woods.
